Welcome back!
Blessings to all of you on this Holy Wednesday. I pray you all are having a fruitful Holy Week as we prepare our hearts and minds for the celebration of Easter Sunday. For those readers who aren’t Christians, I wish you a peaceful week as well.
Seeking the Narrow has added a few new subscribers since last week so here’s a brief rundown of what Blue Wednesday is and how it works. Blue Wednesday is simply a day to share and enjoy blues or blues-inspired music. It starts with me sharing a song or two of the blues genre and then asking all readers to share a song with the group here in the comments or on notes. Most songs will then be added to the Blue Wednesday playlists on Spotify and YouTube. Check out the playlist below and feel free to join in on the fun!
Gatherings
Regular readers know that I usually go for the hunting/ gathering method on Wednesdays. I hunt for a new song to share and gather a song I’ve loved for a long time to bring back to the surface. Well, this week I didn’t feel much like hunting so I dove back to a few tried and true blues tunes.
In the spirit of Holy Week, my first song to share this Wednesday is called, “Darlin’ Don’t Go,” by Sundance Head.
While the song is mostly about a man wishing his lady wouldn’t leave him, the song transitions to a really cool blues version of “Amazing Grace” around the three-minute mark.
As we get closer and closer to Easter Sunday, let us reflect on God’s amazing grace. That through the grace of God and His one and only son, we are freely gifted salvation through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
My second offering this week is a song I’ve loved since I was a teenager. I present to you “Tin Pan Alley” as performed by Stevie Ray Vaughan.
I was a bit hesitant to add yet another SRV track to Blue Wednesday but you truly can’t go wrong with Stevie.
As far as the music is concerned, it’s an unadulterated slow blues jam. I’ve got no issues straying to a bit of rock or country with the blues, but this week I wanted something pure and SRV delivers. So slow down with this one. Find a country backroad, let the windows down, and blast this beauty while driving a little below the speed limit, if possible. Or enjoy a cigar or beer with nothing to distract you from the music. Either way, there’s no rush here. Let the blues simmer.
The lyrics tell the story of a man visiting the “roughest place” he’d ever been. As we approach Holy Saturday, let us remember that Christ not only died on the cross for us, but before his resurrection, he plunged into hades and defeated death so that we no longer have to face eternal fire. Christ put the “roughest place” in its place so that sin and death may no longer have dominion over the creatures God made from out of love for the purposes of love.
Your turn!
I’ve shared my songs for the week so now it’s time for you to share yours. I can’t wait to see what you’ve got.
Have a blessed Blue Wednesday.
Great songs!! And I agree that you can never have too much SRV!
