So Glad It’s Blue Wednesday
Hello friends! Here we are with another Blue Wednesday upon us. For any new folks, let’s go over how Blue Wednesday works.
First, I share a favorite blues song or two with you. Then, you share a favorite blues song of yours with me. Those songs are then added to our collaborative playlists on Spotify and YouTube. It’s always really fun to discover what people are listening to and potentially find new songs or artists to enjoy. So please, jump in and share a favorite song or two with the class today.
Last Week
Last week was a little slow but no less interesting.
and each came in pretty clutch, suggesting great tunes to end the day with. Thanks guys!New This Week
For reasons I can’t describe, I wanted strictly new songs to share this week. I’ve been relying on the classics a bit too much lately, so I felt it was a good time to lively things up and find new artists to share. Thankfully, Al Gore and his rhythm section (that’s an algorithm joke) had my back. Spotify’s bots suggested a few new tunes it assumed I’d like, and I hate to admit it, but the bots were right this time. In a first for me, I’ve actually got four songs to share this week.
First up this week is a soulful southern tune called “Mississippi” by JJ Grey & Mofro. “Mississippi” isn’t strictly blues but mixes a simple guitar riff and straightforward drums with organ and horns to make a laid-back jam, perfect for hanging outside your local pub. So grab a cold one and sit back and relax while you enjoy a float down the “Mississippi.”
Side note:
you may find that it sounds a lot like Chris Stapleton’s “I’m A Ram.” At least I think it does. Going Country-ish
For the next song, we’re moving over from Mississippi to Louisiana with The Band of Heathens. Discovered on Spotify’s Discover Weekly playlist, “Hurricane” is a murky tune combining a bit of storytelling, scratchy guitar solos, and good ol’-fashion fun. The lyrics remind the listener that it pays to be connected to your place. You hear the story of a man from Illinois riding in on his high horse to tell the New Orleans natives about how they ought to take care of their home. The “old man in the corner” drinks his whisky and reminds everyone that hurricanes are nothing new and, being from the land, he has an understanding of how the water will behave. Now, don’t go mistaking the old man. He reminds them the water is “hard, cold, and mean”, but New Orleans is resilient. “Hurricane” also just makes for a fun jam if you want to turn it on and not pay too much attention. I hope you enjoy!
Songs and Scripture
I won’t go too in-depth with the next songs because I don’t want to take too much time this morning, but the next two songs were discovered as I was simply listening to multiple playlists. These next two songs reminded me of stories/ verses from Holy Scripture so I thought I’d share them with you.
20 The young man saith to him: All these I have kept from my youth, what is yet wanting to me?
21 Jesus saith to him: If thou wilt be perfect, go sell what thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come follow me.
22 And when the young man had heard this word, he went away sad: for he had great possessions.
Matthew 19:20-22, Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition
, I think you’ll enjoy the bass line in this one, if nothing else.10 For the desire of money is the root of all evils; which some coveting have erred from the faith, and have entangled themselves in many sorrows.
11 But thou, O man of God, fly these things: and pursue justice, godliness, faith, charity, patience, mildness.
12 Fight the good fight of faith: lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art called, and hast confessed a good confession before many witnesses.
1 Timothy 6:10-12, Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition
Your Turn
That’s all I’ve got for this week. I hope you find a few new songs to enjoy and look forward to what you have to share with me. If you have any suggestions for a theme for next week, send me a message and let me know.
Thanks for being here and I pray you have a blessed week.
Cheers!
Good ones Derek. For this week, I’ve got new music from an “older blues man” Bernard Allison. Funky, bluesy - https://open.spotify.com/track/48MwhzxY9YnYQw0JqRHDFK?si=MwGM4wUrQa6SWanOOM3h5w
I can definitely hear the similarities in that first song and "I'm a Ram." Most of these other songs are pretty solid as well.
As far as my own contribution this week, I once again found myself binging John Mayer over the weekend, and came across this great song:
