Cool story, Derek. The famous musician that no one has every heard of! I certainly hadn't until I read this.
Not much into rock now. But I do love good blues, traditional and modern. Thanks for the story and nice present. I would definitely look up "Mike" again and get to know him.
looked into your post here because I just found out about Joe Bonamassa’s guitar playing by watching a concert he did with Beth Hart. Holy Cow. I dream of seeing both of those musicians live someday, hopefully the both of them together!
Derek, what a great story, esp I love investing in those small moments with neighbors God outs in front of me.
I think they call it being disinterested -- or, not being interested in the outcome of your interaction, a paradox. You’re not interested in gaining something (altho, obvs!!), but you’re giving someone something of yourself -- your love, your time, your smile, your interest in them!
Very cool -- I have to find the right term (disinterested?🤔)
Also, Bonamassa reminds me of Stevie Ray Vaughan, but of a different sort. Excited to hear him over a beer in the backyard or tinkering with our truck.
I’ve interpreted it or extended it with “for love’s sake, expecting nothing” -- which is a bit Theresian. Therese was French and would have read Francis de Sales.
Sorry, I’m apologetically Catholic & like that sort of thing. If you’re not Catholic, we’ll, I’m just so happy to see the universality of Love. God is incredible, He touches everyone.🔥
Thanks for sharing. No need to apologize. I'm Christian but not Catholic. I'm currently attending a Baptist church but have a few issues with the denominations take on the sacraments. But that's for another time..
Anyway, I've had nothing but very loving and positive interactions with Catholics here on Substack and have been digging into some aspects of Catholicism to learn more.
For now, I'm loving that we can all agree to worship and love Christ and to love each other as He loved us. Not that doctrine or theology doesn't matter, but if we can't align on the basics we'll never get anywhere.
What so refreshing about Substack is loving one another in Christ & being among one another as He intended. In this case, we're sharing our greatest treasures -- our thoughts, our stories, our love for Him. I am so, so grateful for this, you've no idea.
I'm peeling myself from Twitter where the Faith demonstrated there is in chaos.. it's so toxic, it's broken my heart because souls can't be themselves, there's so much hesitation about saying the wrong thing, following the right person, blocking/unblocking, it's so tribal, it's terrible.
I am so happy to be here, Derek, and so happy to have met you. I love your Substack! (I look forward to "normalizing" my own..) God bless!
It's amazing how a simple conversation can lead to unexpected friendships and gestures of goodwill. As you rightly pointed out, our world could use more of these moments right now. Thank you for sharing this heartwarming tale of music, friendship, and generosity. It inspires us to reach out and connect with the people around us more often.
WOW 🤩 That is so cool! Incidentally, I’m one of those clients who really love it when customer reps know how to make casual, thoughtful talks! It’s a nice and kind gesture. And bless you for being one of those who can make meaningful connection!
I just hopped onto your post and saw this about Joe Bonamassa. I love his music as well as Beth Hart’s which is where I first heard Joe’s music. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful story. Janet

Ooooo.. Now I have to look up Beth Hart! Thank for reading and for the heads up on a new artist.
Excellent story. This is fantastic! I'll definitely be looking into Joe Bonamassa and I'll be doing so with a prayer for 'Mike' in mind!
Thanks Scoot! Let me know which song(s) you like!

Thank you for your post!!🙏
Let me know when you find the term! haha.
And yes! Bonamassa reminds me of SRV as well. He was obviously inspired by Stevie. And I can confirm that Bonamassa and beer pair very well together!
Thanks for reading!
I found it, it’s “disinterested love” and it’s Salesian, gifted to us by St. Francis de Sales:
>loving attraction to a person or thing only because of the love of God.

Amen, agreed!

This is a beautiful story, and just goes to show what can happen when we treat strangers like human beings.
Thank you for your kind words!
