Happy Blue Wednesday!
So glad to have all of you back again for another Blue Wednesday. This has become my favorite day of the week on Substack. I have so much fun listening to all the suggested songs and have found great new music through this venture.
For those of you who may be new here, here’s how Blue Wednesday works; I share a song or two each week of the blues genre and then ask readers to share their favorite blues tunes with me. Most of the songs are then added to the Blue Wednesday playlists on Spotify and YouTube.
Last Week / This Week
Thank you all for engaging with me last week. I was busier than I thought I would be last Wednesday and didn’t have as much time to dig into the music and respond at the time but I’m thankful for all of you who took the time to read, share, like, comment, and suggest a song of your own. This week will likely be a similar story. I’ll be traveling for work and will end a conference the morning this post goes out. And on top of that, my wife and children have the opportunity to go with me on this short work trip! So, with all the preparation going on to take the children with us, and due to a short-lived but dreadful weekend illness, I’ve no time to sit and listen out for new blues tunes. So, only gatherings this week and I won’t be too wordy in my thoughts on them.
First up, another tune by Connecticut's very own John Mayer. This week I’m sharing Mayer’s song “Helpless.”
The third track on his 2017 album The Search for Everything, “Helpless” might be my favorite Mayer blues tune post John Mayer Trio. He manages to tie a tough subject matter (sobriety) with a solid blues jam and, of course, a wonderful guitar solo.
My second song this week stretches a bit into jazz but is blue to the core. I’ve not done my research and don’t know the original artist behind this song, but I suspect most of you won’t mind that. So, take a listen to “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out,” as performed by Jason Isbell and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Pour yourself a bourbon and imagine yourself enjoying this tune while hiding from the fuzz at your favorite speakeasy.
Your Turn!
I’ve shared my songs for the week, so now it’s time for you to share yours! I’d love to hear what you’ve been bopping to.
As always, stay cool, stay blue, and may God bless you!
My wife and I are currently watching the show Nashville on Amazon. All the songs on the show are written by country artists and performed by the cast, and this is one of the best (and most bluesy):

And, keeping with the showbiz theme, this song (one of my favorite covers) serves as the tune to the opening scenes of the movie RocknRolla:

Such great songs man!
Here is my song for the week. By My Side-Emoni Wilkins. Maybe more Gospel music than blues but I hear blues in it for sure.
